Meet

Timothy Nelson

AIM Scholar

Carroll University (Secondary Education)

Social Studies Teacher, Milwaukee Lutheran Middle and High School

Tim Nelson always loved sports. It was the thread woven through every part of his high school life and, ultimately, the thing that drove his college decision.

A standout student-athlete, Tim competed at a high level while also staying active in Student Council and maintaining the GPA required for National Honor Society membership. For him, success came naturally without much additional effort, which never gave him the opportunity to stop and reflect on his life’s outcomes and proactively identify opportunities for continued improvement and growth. When he did recognize this, the routine and system he had set up for himself were leaning in his favor — why change it now?

“The thing that inspired me the most was continuing to play sports at the collegiate level while earning a degree at the same time.”

He ultimately committed to Carroll University. With the support of All-In Milwaukee’s first-year pre-college planning and scholar advisor meetings, he arrived on campus ready to succeed. Alongside this, he brought his high school habits and tendencies with him.

Those habits held up for a short period. He moved from one thing to the next and stayed focused, finding success during his freshman year.

It was not until sophomore year that the balance he had once sustained started to tip. Sports became his primary focus, pushing academics into the background. Naturally, his grades suffered. Through regular academic advisor check-ins, his advisor began to notice the shift, followed by his coaches.

This was a new feeling for Tim. It was met with honesty — from his advisor, his coaches and most importantly, himself — as he knew he needed to make changes to the routine that had once brought him much success.

“I worked with my advisors and coaches in study sessions and deep conversations to realize that I needed to make a change in my process,” he recalled.

He started putting more time into his education outside the classroom and leaned on study sessions to get his grades back in order.

Those actions paid off, as Tim emerged from the experience a sharper student-athlete. He became more deliberate and intentional with his focus.

It was not until later that he realized his experience was common among student-athletes.

“This pushed me to want to help high school – and maybe one day college – student-athletes do the same.”

For him, it became important to help others realize they did not need to sacrifice sports to focus on academics. The key was building the right routine and consistency to allow both to coexist successfully.

This desire to guide others, combined with the impact his advisors at All-In Milwaukee had on him, directly shaped his career aspirations. Tim originally planned to pursue athletic training to stay close to sports and work with athletes. Over time, however, he realized he wanted to stand in front of students and share the wisdom that helped shape his own experience at Carroll.

The classroom became the final destination, and All-In Milwaukee positioned him to get there successfully.

I worked with my advisors and coaches in study sessions and deep conversations to realize that I needed to make a change in my process. This pushed me to want to help high school – and maybe one day college – student-athletes do the same.

— Timothy Nelson, AIM scholar, Carroll University ’25

During his undergrad, All-In Milwaukee connected Tim with the Center for Urban Teaching (CfUT), a Milwaukee-based program that places undergraduate students in summer school classrooms as part of their teacher preparation work. Tim joined as a summer school teacher and quickly found joy and success in the role.

He returned for three consecutive summers. Each experience built on the last, helping him grow into a stronger educator. The relationships he formed with CfUT staff deepened, and so did his understanding of the kind of educator he wanted to become.

“This internship blossomed into a beautiful relationship,” he said.

By the end of his undergraduate experience, Tim had earned a double major in social studies secondary education and history. When he graduated from Carroll, his internship experience laid the groundwork for what came next: a full-time teaching role at Milwaukee Lutheran Middle and High School, where he now teaches social studies to underclassmen.

“Due to [the] generosity [of All-In Milwaukee donors] I have finished my undergraduate degree with zero student loans. I am married and starting my professional career with a step ahead of the game.”

Tim is currently enrolled in Wisconsin Lutheran College’s Master’s in Leadership and Innovation program, studying on scholarship toward earning his principal’s license. School leadership is his next goal.
